Impact of COVID-19
The marginalized and vulnerable communities in Malaysia are among the most affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. They lack resources, information and resilience to cope with the socio-economic impact of COVID-19, and to rebuild their lives in the aftermath of the pandemic. The continuous interactions with the grassroots communities while delivering assistances to them, was an eye opener for us on the debilitating effect of COVID-19 on the lives of the vulnerable communities in Malaysia, and the need to ensure continual support for the affected communities.
COVIDCAREMY
COVIDCAREEMY was launched by DHRRA on 23rd March 2020, soon after the enforcement of Phase 1 of the Movement Control Order (MCO), by forming a coalition with 20 local NGOs as an immediate response to support and meet the basic and urgent needs of the vulnerable communities during the challenging time. Later in the same year, DHRRA launched phase 2 of COVIDCAREMY following the enforcement of MCO 2.0, which once again left vulnerable and marginalized communities grappling to meet their basic and urgent needs. Notwithstanding all the challenges including a temporary ban on the direct delivery of aid to the affected communities by NGOs, DHRRA continued to steer the COVIDCAREMY initiative through the 3rd phase of operation, to ensure that the marginalized within our society do not suffer the severe consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic in silence.
To date, we have successfully supported and assisted a large number of affected families through the 3 phases of COVIDCAREMY as detailed below:
COVIDCAREMY 1.0: 8492 families, comprising of 37,018 individuals
COVIDCAREMY 2.0: 4520 families, comprising of individuals
COVIDCAREMY 3.0: 11,192 families, comprising of 45228 individuals
The successful implementation of COVIDCAREMY would not have been possible without the generous support and contribution of our existing donors, corporate actors and members of the general public.
Flood Relief through COVIDCAREMY
In addition to provision of grocery aid and meeting basic needs of the affected community, we also identified and met the emerging needs of the victims of December 2021 flood disaster through the following means:
Fund-raising to meet specific needs of the flood victims
Continual Support
The COVIDCAREMY initiative was wound up in April 2022, due to lesser numbers of calls for assistance received from the affected communities, predominantly attributable to the easing of COVID-19 control measures throughout Malaysia. However, DHRRA continues to support affected families and individuals, on case by case basis.
