Reaching out to women through special badminton meet

THE response has been encouraging for the DHRRA Malaysia – International Women’s Day badminton championships to be held at the Destiny Badminton Arena in Klang this Saturday.

The championships, organised in conjunction with the International Women’s Day, is a joint venture by DHRAA Malaysia, Destiny Badminton Club with support of the Premier Institute and Lap Soon.

Organising chairman R. Nanthini said they were expecting about 400 participants.

“We are happy with the response and confident of reaching the target in the next few days.

“It is a unique tournament and except for the mixed doubles, all the other categories are for women.

“The competition is part of DHRRA Malaysia’s initiative to reach out to women together through social programmes,” said Nanthini.

The competition has three age groups, Under-12, Under-15, Under-18, for both singles and doubles.

In addition to the age groups, there will be Open categories for singles and doubles, and mixed doubles.

“We had organised a similar competition last year,” said Nanthini.

“It was a big success so we decided to do it again. And we are grateful for the sponsors coming forward to support the programme,’’ said Nanthini.

Premier Institute, a part of the Skills Malaysia-International Technical Education & Vocational Training Programme, have come on board by offering the cash prizes for the event.

Premier Institute chief executive officer K. Sivakumar said they were impressed with DHRRA Malaysia’s commitment towards community programmes.

“The badminton competition will certainly enhance their profile and we are proud to be associated with the badminton event,” said Sivakumar.

Cash prizes will be presented to the top three winners in each category and T-shirts will be given to all registered participants.

Former New Zealand coach A. Thanabalan, a development official at Badminton Asia Confederation (BAC), has been given the responsibility to co-ordinate the competition.
