Our community development initiatives are led by community members at every stage – from consulting on issues to selecting and implementing actions, and evaluation to address the causes of inequality and disadvantage. It ranges from small initiatives within a small self help groups to large initiatives that involve the broader organised communities for a purpose. It is fundamentally based on the values of human rights, social justice, equality and respect for diversity.
We work to provide protection for the vulnerable and marginalised communities to ensure full respect for the rights of the individual in accordance with human rights law. For over a decade, DHRRA has used community-based approaches to strengthen protection. Vulnerable populations such as the elders, women headed families, children, specially abled individuals, indigenous, minorities, refugees, and stateless persons often face exclusion and poverty. These communities have limited access to exercise their rights. They are either not aware of their rights or due to the nature of the community have limited access to essential services and benefits. Thereby, they live in compromised condition. DHRRA provides social protection for the vulnerable community in order to assist them to take charge of their lives by providing support and resources needed to exercise their rights. These includes, access to government services and benefits, knowledge on constitution and law involving family matters, financial literacy, employment, and etc.
We work to enhance the visibility of rights-based issues to improve the system to the benefit of target communities we work with, for a long-term approach to problem solving requiring sustained effort. The areas of work includes, social protection, statelessness, documentation issues, gender inequality practices, poverty eradication and discriminative practises. We collectively advocate for change through stakeholder partnerships and evidenced based advocacy initiatives.
DHRRA organises a range of programs and activities to raise awareness of the issues affecting the vulnerable, marginalised and stateless communities in Malaysia. The thematic essence of the every awareness initiatives is to make community and policy makers aware of an issue as the first step to change: which includes dissemination of information, social media engagement, and other suitable local, national, regional and global campaigns.
