The Dhrra Malaysia — International Women’s Day badminton championships is set to become an annual affair.
This comes on the back of the organisers – Dhrra Malaysia and Destiny Badminton Club – being encouraged by the response to this year’s tournament.
The sponsors – Premier Institute and Lap Soon — have also indicated a keen interest to continue their support for the event.
Organising chairman R. Nanthini said the championships, held in conjunction with International Women’s Day, which falls on March 8, was a “big success”.
“We had about 250 participants. Most of them were teenagers and they were receptive to the competition, which turned out to be like a get together.
“The sponsors were also happy with the event and have promised to continue their support,’’ said Nanthini.
Premier Institute chief executive officer K. Sivakumar said they were pleased to be part of the championships and added: “It was an excellent platform for young women to get together for a sporting event.
“In fact, some of the young players showed good skills during the matches.
“And we are keen to continue our support for the event,’’ said Sivakumar.
The final was between P. Bhavatharani and Siti Nurshuhani Azman in the girls’ Under-12 age group. The girls, ranked among the top juniors in Selangor, were involved in a tough battle, where in the end, Bhavatharani, of Destiny Badminton Club, won 21-17, 21-18.
Badminton Asia Confederation (BAC) development officer A. Thanabalan, who co-ordinated the programme, said he was impressed with some of the young talent on display.
“We should organise more age group competitions for the youngsters to gain exposure. Only then will they be able to match their rivals as they compete in higher-level competitions,’’ said Thanabalan.
