Over the years DHRRA Malaysia has successfully engaged Community Based Paralegals in the legal empowerment of the stateless community in Malaysia. One such effort is the initiation of the project entitled “Empowering Community Paralegals in Engaging Government Agencies to Address Statelessness Caused by Gender Inequality Practices”, with the support of the Commonwealth Foundation. Through the project, DHRRA seeks to support the government’s efforts in addressing statelessness in Malaysia and contribute towards the attainment of SDG 16.9 (provide legal identity for all). 120 Community Based Paralegals are empowered to form state-wise task force to study and monitor the impact of gender-inequality in nationality policies and procedures. The challenges and outcomes compiled will form the basis for the formulation of policy recommendations that will be shared with relevant stakeholders through short term and long term engagement, towards reformation of gender inequality nationality law.
